A Legacy of Leadership
While public service was always a priority for Ramona, she also enjoyed success in the private sector. In 1986, Ramona and her sister opened a travel agency that boasted nearly two decades of success. Ramona developed and implemented the business marketing plan for the travel agency, which proved to be instrumental in helping to usher the company through a rapidly evolving industry. Within two years of operation, the company was listed as one of the top 500 Hispanic-Owned business in the country. A savvy business sense combined with an enthusiastic, entrepreneurial spirit was seeded in Ramona’s early years working in the private sector, which carries on to present day.
Prior to making her way into the business world, Ramona made a name for herself in politics. Ramona’s political journey started well back in the early 1970s. She was motivated to work with organizations to improve the role of women and minorities in the political spectrum. In 1976, Ramona was appointed as the Chair of the Colorado Voter Registration Project. Under her leadership the number of registered voters dramatically increased in the state of Colorado.
In 1987, with the support of her family and friends, Ramona Martinez ran for Denver City Council, District 3. Mrs. Martinez was victorious in her first campaign and continued to represent the constituents of her district for 16 years. Ramona was elected the first Hispanic female President of the Denver City Council, a position to which she was elected to two consecutive terms. Her dedication and commitment, and hard work as a member of the Denver City Council earned her several prestigious awards from both private and public organizations.
Ramona’s legacy of leadership, both in business as well as politics, was cemented in 2010 when she was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall Of Fame, joining some of the most influential women to ever make their stamp on the state of Colorado.
